Flew a 139 in the gulf some years ago. Nice helicopter. Now I'm flying a 206L and much happier at this stage in my career.

I stated Mx pig & the Support flat out SvCK$!! Agusta(Leonardo) can NOT support them. Servo sieves  M/L/G WOW sw INSIDE R/H M/L/G strut fails too often then down for R&R. T/R blades short LLP!.

to the helicopter world.

All about the money.  Soon the military will be using them for primary helicopter training.

The US Navy ordered and has begun receiving the AW-119 (TH-73). Not the AW-139.  Delivery has been behind schedule.  I think they are around 21 so far.  Maintenance has been an eye opener.  And they have yet to begin instructing students in the airframe.  Only IP-IP flights.  Way too much helicopter for primary flight training in my opinion.  Way too fragile compared to what the Bell 206 (TH-57) accomplished.

Students need to concentrate and get a handle on the basics of flying before they start dealing with complex helicopters, of which the 119 is borderline but the situation is just too much for most beginning students in my experience.

The 119 is basically first or second order tech and has to be watched and coddled carefully.  From greasing moving components to balancing tail rotors often it is nothing to be underestimated as to its down line impact if PM is not accomplished in a timely manner.

One cannot be ham-fisted with the 109/119 series.  Properly maintained the dispatch reliability can be above the 90% range if parts and tech support are sufficient, which is historically not a strong point for the manufacturer though has improved over the decades..

The TH57 was an excellent starting point for beginning instruction, rugged, dependable, forgiving, simple and predictable.  Did 2000 hours (22,500 TT overall) in OH58/206 - had a blast.
