I started in September. 1979. Anytime is a good time to start. Flying in the winter/spring will be better than the summer. No air conditioning in those Lakotas. But, I have no idea what the hold/wait times are now.  When I went through it was 9 months from start to finish. Now a days, who knows. Good luck and have fun.

I call BS on that stat!  Attrition rate for helicopter pilots was less than 10% in Viet Nam. Quit making this sh*t up.   I suppose you were "spit" on when you returned home as many Viet Nam vets claim (another BS fallacy that has never been documented).  You served, you survived.  That's all that matters.

you need to do your homework.  Our class had the highest fatality rate of any Army one, ever - yes, ever.

As to the 10% figure the actual mortality rate of all helicopter pilots in Vietnam was less by half your stated value.  The infantry mortality was 7% though the wound rate almost 50%.

Spit on?  No.  On return only thing I noticed was American indifference and others scared to do what their country might ask of them.  Pretty much just like now though think both qualities are worse.

The real kicker was quite a few veterans (officers) I worked with were dismissing their military endeavor as something they did not lay claim to.  Found that dishonest and less than honorable.

Serving, surviving and being honest with oneself and others is useful!

And that is all that matters.  Serving, surviving and being honest about it all rather than hiding from public condemnation.  Took guts to walk that one given the flavor of misinformation the media pushed to society back then.
