And how much did said solar cost you and how many years before you see a return on that investment?
Haven't found any out there that seem worth the investment (granted, I'm also not in my "retirement" home I plan on being in for more than 5-10 years either) |

Sounds like you didn't plan well for retirement. Quit blaming others for your failure. If you can't find a solution for your problems, you are the problem. Just saying..... |

The solar scam in AZ is the "20 year lease", company takes all the tax credits, you don't own it, you have to get the new homeowner to take over the lease if you sell. Avg. monthly bill - lease, electric bill, "grid fee" ,tax, title, dealer prep averages about 200 - 250.00/ month depending on the house. God help you if it needs repair or service.
As the panels degrade and efficiency and savings drop, you're still paying like their new.
Neighbor and I have similiar houses single story. 2200 sq. ft. same age etc. He has solar, I don't. On average I still pay LESS for electric per year than he does. The company will upgrade his panels...for 15K. lol. |

If solar was so great and economical , the government would not be involved at all. In a free market system I am going to go with the cheapest, most reliable source Of energy. I have a wood burning stove for the cold winters. Summertime I use a lot of electricity for the AC. government needs to get out of the way and let the free market pick the winners and losers. |

Forgot to add: it's more cost effective in the long run to buy it outright. You own it and start realizing the benefit in about 7-8 years, leasing - the curve turns in your favor after about 15 years. By then the panels are 2/3rds depleted.
Remember, A business doesn't do business unless it benefits THEM. They get the bucks, you get the pennies. |

that got into the government solar scheme are starting to hit the EOL on their systems. In the last several years:
Their minimum system charge from the electric company has increased by a factor of 4.
Their panel efficiency has dropped by as much as 40%.
Their storage system efficiency has dropped significantly. The electric companies can no longer be counted on to buy their excess production.
On-Grid use has increased significantly. Repair parts for system repairs are exorbitant or nonexistent. A replacement system is not eligible for gov't subsidies and costs well exceed any savings garnered over the life of the previous system. |

Stop pointing at the un controllables. You decided to retire and live in a particular place. If your living off SS and savings and a part time job it sounds like you did not retire but changed jobs. For what ever reason.... In my mind you delt your own cards many years ago and did not set up for the finish you wanted... dont blame others.
The cost of everything in life regardless of what powers it will go up over time and your income will change very little... |

If you're a handy type person you can easily and cheaply install solar yourself.
solar retails for about a dollar per watt uninstalled. So, five kilo watts is $5,000. a grid tie inverter is about $2,800. materials for installation are about $2,000.
and 3 days of labor. = less than $10,000 for a fully installed five kilowatt system.
after 12 years it's fully paid off, minor maintenance (depending on location).
a bad hailstorm might completely destroy the panels. Golf ball size or larger woutdoor be bad.
if you're not able to install the system yourself then its probably not cost effective. |
