This happened last week:

https://news.usni.org/2022/07/27/10-navy-helicopters-suffer-major-damage-several-blown-over-in-sudden-norfolk-storm

That REALLY sucks.  Hard to believe nobody saw this coming but weather does happen...

I remember seeing the picture of the 4-5 Chinooks all flopped over on their sides... and they WERE chained down; just too loose.  I think it was at Fort Hood.  Can't find that pic online anywhere though.  It was on the Systems CD sold by The Hangar I believe.

I also saw a hard copy picture at Rucker where they had a single OH-58A blown over by a microburst (a mechanic nearby heard a rush of air but it wasn't a gale wind across the airfield; it wasn't part of an active storm over them).  Same thing; it was chained down but too loose.

PHI had 2 or 3 S76's untied that hoovered & rolled over. A Mech went & set the electric RB to get one settled down No incident. I think they gave him a whopping $100 for not only saving that A/C but risking his life.

Back in 2012 AMC had just put EC135 outside AC NJ When pilot new storm was coming & elected NOT to put it in the hangar(it was on a dolly) They eventually rebuilt it & that's the one the the pilot died in the KILG crash(RIP) 2018? I think that A/C was haunting & didn't want to be in service! Yeah little superstitious ex hockey player/goalie

It's hangar, with an A, not hanger, with an E.

Yup, I remember (Tenneco, Tango 4-7).

I was off that day and came into work the next day, after the wx, and asked if "anybody" flew yesterday.

I don't recall who responded, but he didn't miss a beat with "we had a couple of '76's try to fly, but they didn't get very far"...I then gathered my stuff and went out to preflight and saw for myself...what a mess.

There was a pic floating around some time ago from the gulf where a 206 was chained to the platform deck, when the pilot went up to check after the storm the skids were there, the airframe wasn't.

I recall we had one that went overboard EC-120, it was strapped down to the deck all that was left were the rachet straps... storm took the rest to the bootom!

Visited the Gulf of Mexico platform where my first off-shore mechanic had been reassigned. He told us that he's seen their aircraft fall by the gally window after a storm a couple weeks before. I asked why it wasn't tied down?

It had been- the wind pulled the tie-downs out of the deck.

the storm was coming had called the FBO to bring the helicopter in.  He was not allowed to tow the helicopter into the hangar and the FBO took care of all the jets first and didn't get to the helicopter in time.

accurate.  The weather unexpectedly evolved so the pilot called the maintenance tech who could not respond in time to get the thing in the hangar.

Not sure about which AC was involved in the KILG apparent LOC but I can advise when on vectors for the ILS and using on field VOR/DME for distance info go ahead and hold the freq in the DME head and switch over to the ILS freq as soon as possible.

IF you don't and then wind up inadvertently using on field VOR for lateral guidance (without doing an aural check of the freq) you won't wind up with glide slope information and eventually possibly do a missed approach.  If you are already at the MA altitude just fly to the MA point then without hitting the GA button.  IF you hit the GA button and initiate a climb (for what reason, if already at the correct altitude for that part of the IAP) for the GA make sure you add collective power.

IF you don't and are at the company required airspeed of 90 knots (not required by FAA unless using Cat A minimums, then only at the MA point - check Part H in the AIM or whatever they call it these days) you may just wind up with zero airspeed and in a turning spiral to the right with a tremendous rate of descent.  This was taught at WPB FSI a long time ago as a recovery scenario - many pilots did NOT figure it out.  Sounds ludicrous and impossible and whatever but those are the situations that are deadly, the ones you think are just not outside your wheel house.

up in a microburst almost 50 years ago.  Must have been on the edge of it because as soon as it threw us for a 300' loss it was over.  You won't believe how violent they are.  300' is a stunning loss.

We had a Texas T-storm rip thru our flight line at Ft.Hood an flip a fewof our anchoredto the tarmac 58's. Picked one up and hurled it about 100 ft.Sometimes there is nothingshort of repostion that will protect hardware.
