That's such a stupid saying. Just like the "any landing you can walk away from....blah, blah, blah.
And by the way, Rotak crashed a 47 this week too, so your theory doesn't hold up. |

The real question is why do we keep bad pilots in our ranks.
Why do they not get fished out during training.
There are huge problems with pilots not being to snuff both on skills and mentally. |

THE REASON BAD PILOTS DON'T GET WEEDED OUT IS THAT THEY AREN'T BAD ALL THE TIME. THEY MAKE BAD DECISIONS OR SHOW A LACK OF SKILL EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE AND THEIR POOR PERFORMANCE USALLY DOESN'T RESULT IN A CRASH, AND OFTEN GOES COMPLETELY UNOBSERVED.
COUPLE THAT WITH THE FACT THAT "GOOD" PILOTS ARE SUBJECT TO THE OCCASIONAL BAD DECISION OR CARELESS BEHAVIOR THAT RESULTES IN A CRASH.
I PREACH THAT WE MUST ALWAYS BE OUR WORST CRITIC, LEARN FROM OUR OWN PERFORMANCE, AND RECOGINIZE THAT WE ARE CAPABLE OF SERIOUS MISTAKES, OR JUST BAD LUCK. |

I agree to a point.
Part of the reason we should have better pay and benefits are to attract the right kind of person, mentally to this kind of work.
In this job, like many other jobs, has a extremely high responsibility level with no room for mistakes.
Unlike a race car driver or aerobatic pilot, when they screw up they take out one person.
If we screw up, we take out a lot more, same goes for airlines, 100-300 pax, you get good money for that responsibility.
Like it or not, in the helicopter industry, we have many unprofessional pilots with the wrong attitude towards this career.
Military and civilian alike. |

Good pilots have crashes, too. One mistake is all it takes. A good pilot accepts that mistakes are inevitable and works very hard to delay as long as possible that mistake, or make the mistake as small as possible when it comes. |
