Seems like a really strange accident. Not knowing the details. Right side up, bucket still in dip spot, line attatched. near vertical impact. strange way for a 47 to crash. This thing came down hard for that to be fatal. Will be interesting to see since Columbia just built that thing not long ago. RIP |

much about the CH47, BUT I have seen imagines of them lifting some serious loads. You think a bucket snag could take it down??? Defiantly strange accident from initial view point. RIP!!!!! |

If the combing gear box failed and the blades become out of sync, would it hold together to the ground like that? |

So all the twins I have ever flown in my life have differing sized tanks or supply tanks to each engine so you don't lose both engines at the same time. Is the CH47 the same way? |

Pretty accurate by watching the few clips of it working I saw on the news. Bucket all over the place, aircraft in dip looking like it's dancing. I'm gonna say something to do with the line / bucket / wind, and or complete fuel starve. Doesn't matter if you have 20+ years in the military, flying a line with a 20,000 lb load on a windy day in that area is no joke. |

of course the ntsb needs to do their work but at first glance very possibly an issue with the flying of the bambi. |

Depends on the type certificate configuration. Some do, most don't. I think helimax runs with 3 all the time and occasionally see the tanked guys running with 3. |

Lots of speculation here, but not a lot of facts....I have only seen one photo (and is is not very clear) of the wreakage. From that photo, it would appear that the aircraft descended vertically, rapidly, with very low rotor rpm.
Why do I think that? In February of 1971 my crew and I survived a combining transmission failure in a CH-47B. After descending vertically through 200 ft of double canopy jungle we hit the forest floor at an estimated 2000 fpm. Before the wreakage burned (it was on fire on the way down) it looked very similar to this one. The double canopy jungle most likely was our saving grace.
That being said, let the NTSB sort it out and show respect for our fellow aviators....RIP

Possibly dipping cross-current and getting the aircraft into a non-recoverable out of CG condition? |

Cross current? No. The bucket goes where it’s directed or drifts in fast water. Once the load is on the helicopter hook it would be impossible to be out of CG.
Even a 1000 gallon bucket would be below the lift of a CH-47 |
