Does anyone know if the companies requiring 200hrs night are firm on that? Or has anyone seen some flexibility in the hiring process. Thanks

Who's talking about tours? The OP question was in regards to HAA, go back to sleep.

Sleep. The Tours reply is telling the low time night guy to get his night time by going tours. There is a path to getting to a HAA job, and the tours reply guy is telling the low night time guy to quit looking for shortcuts.

If you're flexible on base assignment I'm sure the company will be flexible on hiring minimums. If you're willing to take a chronically understaffed base I bet they'll take you with almost no questions asked.

Surprised you will qualify if your night hours are low as most companies require NVG time. Maybe get some fixed wing IFR time at night, it will pay dividends later.

Best IFR training is at night.

Getting comfortable in the NAS IFR system by riding along on FW flights relieves huge apprehensions and will answer a lot of questions leaving brain power to pay attention to flying the helicopter.

In the helicopter world one must also deal with odd ways of starting an IFR leg, discontinuing it (especially if still in Class B airspace), getting clearances, void time realities and so on.

Good luck, and good advice.

Go into utility and get some real experience under your belt. Then come HAA. Go fly frost, go fly Ag, fire fight, charter, etc. Don't come here after 1 year instructing, and 1-2 years tours. We don't need 1TT wonders.

go fly frost lol. Ag, yessir, that will get you ready for meds crews and part 135. I don't think I've met one EMS pilot that has done any of those things.

I have to say some of the best pilots I have ever flown and worked with took the 1 year flight instructor/1.5 - 2 years of tourist flying and moved to HAA. Experience is great but a young pilot with great training (and proper correction of bad habits, if any) can be awesome.

they can also be in over their heads. and not realize or admit it until it's too late. with innocent passengers onboard.

or simply under-perform because they learned to be "commercial pilots" by flying up and down the same strip or flying the same pattern 1000's of times.

there is no "correcting" anything. who would do the correcting? the nurse? it's a single pilot job, you bring skills, you don't build skills. and certainly not at 100 hrs/year.

ems is a retirement gig. go have fun. learn your trade, build skills and experience. have adventures. see the world. ems will always be here when you're done. you'll be a better ems pilot for it.

Pretty sure AZ is...might have been some Gulf flying too but just building time in light ship. I guess my whole point was don't write off the guys who went the flight instructor- tour operator route as inferior pilots.

A low time guy mentioned by keyboard meat servo at best is an outstanding example of Someone whome feels lacking in there own qualifications.

 Think,

Why yes I am a low time, I spend most of my time low to the ground.  Just sayin not sprayin, Cheese and rice, flea's and mice.

EARN THE FUEL BURN!

Perhaps consider buying a lower cost airplane, do a 20 hr add on ppl, fly a bunch of night then sell the airplane.

If the subject is about night flying then going and flying utlity and fire is a waste of time...  you wont get any night on either one.... when was the last time you plucked an ac unit at night or dropped water at night.... unless your program runs NVG's.

With the use of NVG's... night flying (unaided) is not the most important part of your day... Find companies that are realistic based on your experience... most will work with you....  insurance companies run the numbers game so getting past the recruiters and to the hiring managers is what will help.

OP: The 200 hours night is likely an insurance or accreditation requirement; so there's not gonna be alot of flexibility there. As far as the others chiming in on how HAA needs guys with more experience, well... yes and no. Any segment of the helicopter industry benefits from having more seasoned, experienced pilots. But there's nothing so particularly demanding or difficult about HAA that would prevent a guy/gal coming from tours from doing well. I've been at it over 6 years... nothing special.
