VRS phraseology started years ago describing a state concerning tail rotors. When did it switch to describing settling with power? I'm not sure, but I think that acronym really disassociates the true nature of the problem called 'settling with power', which is exactly what it is. And anyone who deliberately induces settling with power to the degree that results in an unrecoverable condition is a fool. Even AirBus agrees. To bad Bell didn't get the notice.

Bell thinks you should crash since that's what an unrecoverable situation is. now go away. |

Years ago, the FAA changed from saying "Settling With Power" in all of their publications to saying "Vortex Ring State" in most of their publications. The last time I looked, the FSIMS still listed recognition and recovery from "settling with power" as the maneuver to be checked. The US Army and the FAA terms conflicted, and it seems the FAA decided to adopt the Army version. I believe what the Army calls Power Settling is what we civilians called F***ing up and not having adequate power to arrest a descent, say in a high gross weight, high DA situation. |

SWP is very different than not using adequate power to arrest a descent. |

it you don't have enough collective to stop the rate of descent. VRS is when you still have power available but the tip vortices make collective inputs not only futile but worsen the situation by increasing the size of the vortices and thus the rate of descent. they are two seperate events that anybody that know anything about helicopters, already knows. settling with power, if allowed to continue, will lead to VRS when operating below translational lift. the op tells you what he thinks settling with isn't, not what he thinks it is because he obviously doesn't know. the best line of his idiocy is that Bell wants you to train VRS to the point of crashing but airbus doesn't! lol that should tell you something. |

It's a term pilots use when they have pulled all the collective the machine will allow and it doesn't stop the descent. Your turn. |
