I have been flying for 30 years, civilian trained 7000hrs ATP / CFII.

CFI, Tours, Off-Shore, EMS etc. EMS for the last 15 years in an IFR twin to be home with kids. Now an empty-nester and the only regret I have in the industry is not doing long line. What are the chances of a 50 something year old guy getting a slinging job?

I would say you can do whatever you want to. Looks like you have plenty of experience.

Operators don't want experience. They want ya at minimums so they don't have to pay you your worth.

Most operators I know don’t care mush about ATP and time. A good attitude and flexibility go much further.
Start looking at operators with Hawks and fire contracts with a bucket. It will help if they have light machines as well. Do some second seat time and get any minute you can from the PIC.

Keep in mind utility is much more relaxed then most of the things you have experience in.

I'm in the same boat, almost identical minus the offshore time and me being at just over 5,000 hours. Had some fire and long-line experience 20 years ago. The last time I tried making the switch was 2 or 3 years ago. Nobody had any interest then, now I'm even more motivated to make a move. Best of luck to you!

I think to get the "foot in the door" is the most important thing. Columbia seems to be a good company. If that SIC would be offered to me, I would bite the bullet on it, work my behind off and hope the company and crew will keep me after six monyhs. Also, six month in the logging business without obligations, will get you the inside scoop if you like this. Not for everyone and I am glad I dont have to do it anymore.

As a former CP/DO, I would welcome a guy with a bag of experience. He has done something and can advance quickly if the opportunity arises.

Good luck!

In the same boat and Erickson was the only operator that posed any initial interest and even that went nowhere. I've been trying for over a year and most I've spoken to want young inexperienced so they can pay low but mold along the way.

Only way you're gonna get the LL time is to get the same crap job that we had to get it. Slinging dog poo, fires, maybe a clapped out 206 running bags, maybe some backwater drill job in AK.

Not trying to dissuade you, but everyone here telling you to sit SIC to get experience isn't being honest. It's a good way to get stuck as a SIC.

Think real hard about the pay cut and schedule you'll have to put up with. And the competition from very hungry and young guys who pick things up pretty quick.

End of the day, if you're pleasant to be around and have good work ethic, you'll have a better shot of not getting kicked off the job before you figure out how to fly a line.

Good luck, it's not an easy road. And you may find yourself there wondering why you wanted it in the first place...

Hello, I'm a 26 year long line pilot for Columbia Helicopters and a co-owner of a long line training company called Volo Mission out of Campbell, TX.

If you would like to reach out to me off line I'll be happy to provide some insight and discuss some of the things you could expect when considering entering the utilty and fire sector at a mature age. I'll can also provide contact info of folks you could talk with that have been in the same situation as yourself and who could speak first hand of what they experienced.

Feel free to contact me at ahutchings@volomission.com if you would like to.
