It's lightweight, and strong, and in many ways perfect for structures in aircraft. |

Has it all up in and around the C/b area.
First one we got had one of them brass alt static source pitot static switch toggle switches mounted incredibly close to buss bars up there on the copilot side of the aircraft.
That Switch was installed by the factory. I was tasked at completion to look over the C/b pnl as a preliminary inspection before closing as lots of new wiring had been run and installed by our company for our needs.
I pointed out to my Lead that I did not like the clearance of the buss bar to the big honking back side of that brass switch and it was too close for me. He kinda agreed with me but to get engineering involved and move the switch that the factory located was gonna be a headache.
Well, weeks later they closed the panel anyway and were doing power on checks for the first time. Suddenly someone hollered....hey....I smell something burning. Sure enough, that Bar had made contact with the chunk of brass on the back of that switch.....that switch was mounted directly on Carbon Fiber. Now carbon fiber has a low resistance to conductivity but it still conducts. It was not a dead short enough to blow a current limiter but it was low enough to heat the surrounding carbon fiber and cause it to start cooking.....thus the burnt smell.
Needless to say, Agusta was notified and the switch was relocated on that aircraft and all the ones we received there after.
Story time over.
Go away now. |

who has zero clue of any of the mechanical workings of modern helicopters and likely the OP who started the dumb thread in the first place.
Stick to the wiggling sis. It's the only thing you are good at. Since you can't understand how a story like that could be useful or relevant to your dumbazz flying along and smell something burning in the cockpit but think to yourself......nah, it's nothing, probably just that toast I had for breakfast this morning still stuck in my nose. WHat could possibly go wrong in my brandnew helicopter......la la la...I'll just keep heading toward the beach, no chance I wind up in the drink today.
Sleep....that's where I'm a viking!

To have a helicopter industry, if you de carbonize. It's impossible to even build a helicopter without mechs and technicians who are carbon based, if you de carbonize them. |

Yes, it is strong and lightweight, but voids still happen and it requires specialized training to patch and repair. Problems arise when maintenance techs try to make repairs using fiberglass and aluminum honeycomb repair schemes. Doubt many field mechs have been given this training and end up making a small problem worse when completed. |

Most modern helicopters manufactures have model specific structural repair manuals to follow. If not contact the manufacturer for a repair scheme. Unless you do a lot of this type of work you are better off having a company that specializes in composite do the work. They will have the specialized tools and experience. |
