So what happened to USAA insurance? used to be a good carrier now just a bunch of gentle snowflakes on the phone over apologetic .No progress in over 7 years with finding a secondary carrier to write homeowners policy for coastal properties...

Yep, they started going to crap 10 years ago and sadly so. Me and many of my Army buddies felt the same way and found better coverage, customer service, and lower costs elsewhere. |

I've been a member for 50 years. Three hurricanes and a couple of totaled vehicles over the years has demonstrated to me they are still the best insurance, particularly for homeowners on the market.
I don't know if the post above was referring to flood insurance, if so that's a Federal Government program. USAA, or no insurance company I am aware of, provides flood coverage if you are in a coastal area or build in the flood plain. |

When "woke" USAA gave away my Subscriber saving Account money to BLM, I gave up on them. Progressive has been an improvement. Good riddance USAA |

They used to be the go to place for military officers. The increased risk brought on with anyone and everyone has made them less than competitive. |

I wish they'd stop spending money on all the dumb advertising on TV and sponsoring stupid sporting events, especially the ones where the participants refuse to stand for the National Anthem.
They have a limited audience...I'm pretty sure everyone in the world knows that if you're a military member you're eligible to join. Stop wasting money on advertising. |

Insurance companies do not want to insure homes in coastal areas due to hurricanes. It's a fact. Fortunately, individual states insurance commissions require them to do so if they want to write policies in that state. However, they do not have to be competitive...if you don't want the risk, keep premiums high. Most companies just want auto and life insurance policies. Now, in defense of USAA, (32 yr member) they've always taken good care of me on the automobile side of the industry. |

trouble with two other carriers with the smallest matters. Called USAA and they stated right from the get-go other carriers problems are not theirs. Been with them for 48 years now. Their mantra has always been "how can we help", or, "we'll be on it today".
Get the usual disbursement from them per year (Dec) and 10% of the personal mutual account per year.
Not unhappy at all. |

We had a heat wave in NW Oregon this past June and it melted my Vinyl siding. they refused the claim saying some minor decorative wrought Iron was to blame. It was on house when bought and insured 13 years ago. I guess I was self insured for 13 years and did not know it. |

Friend in the USMC had a propane bottle line come detached while using it, at the burner end, and the ensuing flame alternately burned his car, then the house, then the car, then the house, etc.
USAA delicned to cover one or the other.
This fellow, a LTC, simply recited their coverage of single peril multiple loss - they paid for both.
I had a really rough younger life (I know, waaaaah) and learned a few things. The most prominent was "don't take an ounce of scheitttt" from anyone, ever.
When any entity has ago at me, or underestimates me, the battle begins and it begins from the top down with my throwing every tool in the box.
Won't say how high I used the tactic but it never, ever, let me down.
I never worried about my reputation or social standing, just if I could live my career and life as nicely as possible.
Don't take scheittttt!! |

Had roommate get swindled by USAA when they wouldn't cover auto damage from getting hit by someone when it was parked outside. Another buddy had issues with getting a home estimate for damages from a storm.
Made the jump after hearing both stories and the fact that Alfa beat USAA's home and auto insurance by almost 20%. Been with Alfa for over 5 years now; got a new roof after a windstorm that was zero headache - they just wrote a check and did it quickly. Added a teenager to the plan recently and my insurance is STILL $100-300 less than other friends I know (with both USAA and other insurance companies).
Haven't looked back since dropping USAA insurance and don't regret it. I do think opening up to the masses is what changed their customer service.
Still bank with them, though. Good credit history and generally they're good enough in that department.

They now pay at least 10% of my SSA, so my premiums are lower then anything on the market. They've treated me very well, no regrets. |

I can't remember the years(maybe 40 years), but they also send a senior bonus each year along with the SSA bonus. 55 years and still happy. |
