It is an almost universal leeway cops will give of 10%. So if the speed limit is 70, they almost ignore anything below 77. School zones, fire stations, and others sensitive areas, not so much leniency there.

unless you drive cross country for a living you don't save that much time.

70 mph = 1.17 miles per minute

82 mph = 1.37 miles per minute

Unless you're driving hundreds of miles the amount of time you save aren't worth the fine.

Doing 82.  Locked in on cruise.  Like I've done for the last 10 years straight for 26 weeks every year.....both ways.

I turn what should be a 4hr drive into 3.

209/82=2.55=2hrs 33 min.

209/70=2.99=3 hrs

Obviously you can't do the whole trip at 70/82 mph, so the difference is going to be less since part of the trip will be at comparable speeds (25/35/45 etc).

45mph speed limit thru crystal beach?  nah 70

65mph speed limit from high island to winnie?  nah 82

do the math 209/70 is 2.98 hours, 209/82 is 2.55 hours.    You saved 25 minutes, was that worth the ticket?

And in most road environments the car that blasted past at a great rate of knots winds up at all the same stop lights with ya, at the same time.  Speeding is a waste of effort, gas, and etc.

Driving faster gets you there sooner, but it comes at the cost of an occasional ticket.

Is the juice worth the squeeze? 

Add to it the ticketing process taking 20-30 minutes even if your license, insurance, registration, and vehicle are in good order. If you factor that in, any time you might have saved is eaten up while you are detained awaiting your ticket.

But how often do you get caught? Cost of doing business.

At 12 over, you are waving an "I want a ticket" sign. Unless the rest of the traffic around you is at the same speed, you are making yourself a ticket target to a cop. I don't even want the hassle of 1 ticket. I guess others have more tolerance for ticket risk.

Last nights incursion took 5 minutes and I was back on the road.

"Limit + 9" on the Interstate and you will NEVER get a ticket.  School zone?  Different story.  Why tempt fate with "limit + 12?"  Seems unwise.

radar/lazer detecters are worthless.....but check the paperwork from it cause some companies used to say they would pay your ticket if one was received using their product.

But Ka detection has kept me ticket free for 10 years.

Had probably 50 close calls that were Ka.

That detector has more than paid for itself in tickets saved and off time not spent on a road.

But now with Johnny Law upgrading to Laser and more and more jurisdictions phasin out the Ka for higher tech Laser.....

I may have to start slowing down.

Or find a new job.  A local job.

Very simple. Just don't lead the pack. Find someone exceeding the limit (a rabbit) and follow him a few car lengths behind. Watch for his brake lights, esp at the top of overpasses or hills. Your alarm will will sound when he gets lit up and you should have time to slow down before they reset.
