Remember a year is so ago when the naysayers on here were berating the RW folks for going to the FW world at the airlines?  I do.  Many said the rotor pilots would never make it to the bigs...

RTAG is now full of RW pilots who have made it to the Legacy carriers.  American, United, Delta, and SW have all hired dozens of former rotor heads.  To those professionals I say, CONGRATULATION!!

If you are content as a RW pilot at your EMS, offshore, etc gig, keep doing great things!   If, however, you have the itch to try the FW side, there has never been a better time to make that jump.

Many helicopter pilots have a certain defensiveness and superiority complex about what we do, and some condescending hubris thrown in there as well.  They feel that flying helicopters is the BEST and that every other type of flying is either beneath them or dreadfully boring and not worthy of consideration.  Thus, they deride and insult anyone who might find other types of commercial flying enjoyable. But there's a big world out there in aviation-land.  Airline flying is as different from helicopter flying as could be, but...oddly...some pilots actually like both!  Imagine that.

meanwhile the rotor wing companies can't figure out why some of us left . They either are stupid or just don't want to fork up the cash to retain seasoned pilots. Haven't regretted swapping over one bit, time is now!!! Get those apps in!

I flew both and enjoyed both.  Helicopters are more demanding , at least the older generation stuff.  I'm not saying flying a turbo- jet aircraft isn't.  Its just in a turbo prop or turbo-jet aircraft you get more time to think, in a helicopter your thinking all the time.  But they both demand you think. I don't know how else to describe it.

Who did the RTAG route 4 years ago. No airplane time prior to starting the program. Gave up 10 years of EMS time and money to foot the bill for his airplane ratings. Finished and went to Mesa as a regional first officer. Did his time, survived on crapp wages, and dodged the Covid drawdown. He is now a 767 first officer for a major cargo carrier, making $$$. He paid his dues and is reaping his rewards. Bottom line, if you are under 45 years old and can get hired at a 121 program, do it!! Leave the EMS world with its krappie wages.

No second chances.
