Little one recently joined the family, thinking about being responsible. 38yo excellent health, no nicotine, State Farm quoted me almost $400/mo for a 20 year term $1mil policy! Who are you all using? Any recommendations?

If ex military try Army Air Force Mutual Aid Association. I ran into the same problem with State Farm, Prudential etc  They don't like helicopters

A good add on for most Pilots is AD&D (accidental death and dismemberment)

I fly EMS and with our company benefits they offer life insurance etc , I just get AD&D for about $10 a paycheck which is $1 million coverage, ( I also did it for my wife 😁) same deal for spouse..

so check with your benefits.  Term life can get a bit expensive .

Premiums always go up with age. Eventually they become cost prohibitive. The need for insurance as a replacement for your income does go down, so it offsets somewhat the increasing premiums with age. Also term builds no cash value.

When I bought the insurance, the salesman suggested buying 2 policies.  I was looking for $500k. I bought $250k for 30 years and $250k for 15 years (when kids would be out of the house).  Once kids are gone, wife wouldn't need as much.  This cut my premium down quite a bit rather than buying $500k for 30 years.  I am former military and used Navy Mutual Aid Association.

If ex-military, USAA.

Travers Insurance.  traversaviation.com

Look into the different types and do your research. More expensive, but look into whole life which has guaranteed cash value growth.

A buddy of mine pointed me to AAFMAA.  If you're former mil then there isn't a better deal around.  Blows USAA out of the water.  Affordable term life to get you through kids getting out of college time and still quite a few years after for your wife's sake before premiums go too high.  By then, your retirement plan should cover your wife for the rest of her life.

Got started with them when I turned 40 or 41 and even got a small term plan for my wife as I know I wouldn't want to work for a while while dealing with grief and taking care of kids at same time.

Good on you for thinking this way.  Be sure to pass it on and mentor other guys as well.

Yep. I got an $800,000 policy for $50 a month when I was 40. I made sure they knew I was a helicopter pilot. They did not care. They said you can build a rocket ship and fly it out of your backyard if you want

Very unusual. While "they" are apt to tell you anything, the policy will spell out coverage and exclusions. Very unusual for a standard life policy to cover a pilot loss while piloting.

Good to know. To be honest I never read the fine print in the policy. I will have to check it out. I am out of Flying for the time being anyway. I definitely ran into trouble trying to get life insurance from the big companies  They were OK with jets but not helicopters

Yes, As someone noted below, AOPA has a reasonable policy for members that covers all piloting including aerial application, the highest loss rate. Premiums are not that unreasonable. The policy is actually underwritten by Met Life.

I ended up going with 2 policies. 1 through AOPA that adjusts upwards in cost as I age, and another one through work that does the same thing. Don't mind the cost going up every 5 years as I should be able to slowly reduce the amount of coverage I need as my investments grow.

I'd stay away from whole life policies, keep insurance and investments separated.

Why is term better than whole life insurance?

Whole life insurance is a rip-off! It often costs hundreds of dollars more a month and includes a "savings" plan with a terrible return. Instead, pay a fraction for term life insurance and save or invest what you would have paid for whole life insurance.

Call ZANDER Insurance or go online for a free quote.

Google Dave Ramsey and term life insurance for more information.

Best of Luck..and good for you for securing your family's long-term stability!

Term is more expensive than whole, and you can't even get term at any price past 80. Van Gogh was still having children into his 90s. Comparing apples to apples, the premiums of term policies become equal or less than the payout benefit. Whole has some features that term doesn't have, that you might want.

Have kids when you're 90 years old??? You are not making a very strong argument!

Never lease a car

Never buy a timeshare

Never finance your vehicles

avoid credit card debt

pay with cash or debit card and...

only buy whole life if you cannot qualify for TERM life insurance

or continue to live paycheck to paycheck (like 75% of Americans) and be broke your entire life.

I'll state what is probably obvious, which is that many life insurance companies have a pilot exclusion clause.  Read the policy carefully.

I think United of Omaha offers policies with no aviation or pilot exclusion.

Another item you can look for - some companies have a "return of premium" option which refunds to you all premiums paid at the end of the term (unless you already collected the benefit).

As soon as you say pilot, the quote goes up 3 to 4 times. I shopped around and found AOPA to have the best rates.  They do not have an aviation exclusion either.  Their rates are published on their website.  You also have to be an AOPA member.

Congratulations on being a dad!

I just did a 30yr policy with Pilot insurance center. Did 1,000,000 for 1100.00 a year. Price dropped almost 800 a year when I stopped flying EMS.
43Yrs old, no health issues. It was nice to deal with a company that works in Avaition.
