Tim passed today, at home, they discovered inoperable brain cancer about a month ago. He had seen all the experts at OHSU in Portland, he was not undergoing any treatment.  He was 78.  He quit flying in 2018.

Tim bought an Aeronca Champ in Guatemala when he was 16 and flew it back to Taft California. his home then.  Yes he was bilingual.  He enlisted in the Army and went to a program of eighteen months of apprentice training at Corpus Christi Army Depot and came out an A&P.  He went to Warrant Officer Rotary Wing Flight School.  His first tour flying in Vietnam was in 'B' and 'C' model gunships.  He was awarded a Silver Star.  He went back to Vietnam as a Crane maintenance Officer.  He retired from the Army as a Major with 20+ years.

He then worked for some time as a Lycoming Technical Representative.  He held a Bachelor's and Master's degree.  He hired on to the FAA at the Saint Louis FSDO and was the original POI for Air Evac Lifeteam.  He transferred to the Portland, Oregon PDX FSDO, and at time was the POI for JL Aviation, Columbia Helicopters, Evergreen Helicopters, Croman, Erickson, Brim and several others.  He retired at the end of 2011 from the FAA.

He was an Airline Transport Pilot, Single and Multiengine Land, Helicopter, typed in SK-61 and 64, and a Commercial Hot Air Balloon Pilot.  He was an Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic.

I learned to NOT do a settling-with-power demonstration in a S61 from Tim, then I did it anyway and it still is probably the scariest moment of my flying career (not kidding). RIP Tim, nice guy.

Sorry to hear, I had him as our POI for many years 95-12 and really enjoyed interacting with him and Gary too!!! He REALLY promoted aviation.

Learned a few things, had a good time and above all he was fair and realized that most Helicopter operators in the PNW are not Alaska Airlines (unlike the current crop of the POI's) I could get a Ops manual change done in a week or two tops, the last one in 2016 took almost a year......

Gary, thanks for letting us know, I'll give you a call

Tim and I worked together at the STL FSDO. We did a ton of safety presentations together. They called us the Tim and Fred show. We were good bud's. Sad for his loss.

I had worked with Tim as a POI since 1987 through three company's.  Still joke about having to pass his inital stress tests from FAA audits, check rides, to pilot certifications.  Always fair and honest, treated everyone with respect.  Best of all, learned a lot along the way.

Rest in peace.

Gary, thanks for posting. First met Tim when I got my SK64 type rating. Did a lot of check rides and training with him in the years after and learned a lot and even had a lot of fun!

" Let's go commit aviation"

Tim was the POI for Hillsboro Aviation (among others) in 1999 when I was the Ass't. Chief Pilot. He got me my current job when I was over at the FSDO getting some company paperwork signed. He asked me how I was doing and when I mentioned that I was looking for another job, he smiled and said, "I know a guy, let me make a call". He picked up the phone, dialed a number and told the fellow on the other end, "Hey, I got a guy you need to talk to", then handed the phone to me. After a short discussion of my qualifications my potential new boss asked when I could come out. I asked if he wanted me to come for an interview and he said, "No, I'm hiring you, when can you come out to get started". Tim just sat there with a big grin on his face as he watched my eyes bug out. Of all my good memories of working with Tim, that one was the best.
