They're scared despite weather being more than 2000 and 5 most days!!!! They just don't "feel right" when we fly in rain. Are you serious!?!?!? I'm not talking about a downpour that reduces visibility either.
Absolutely ridiculous.
They usually freak out when there's ANY green on the radar and start telling you how "uncomfortable" they are to fly today (i.e., No-Go).
When you're out there flying, they can't see a town about 10 miles away and start acting all scared and talking about how they can't see such and such... and even when you point out on the moving map how far away things are and the minimums we need (given your area) and how we're still 1-3 miles MORE than is required per the FARs they still act all nervous.
If they're scared to fly in rain, they shouldn't drive to work in the rain. The dangers are FAR worse there every time on the way to work (hydroplaning, people driving slower in front of you because they can't see, etc.). |

Don't take it personally. They are looking for any reason to get out of a flight. You're not going to change their work ethic or their attitude, and that's not your job. I KNOW how frustrating it can be. Only you can decide if putting up with the laziness and the toxic culture many medical "crewmembers bring to the job is worth the cushy schedule and easy flying teat comes with this job. If you've had enough or can't let it roll off, that's okay. This is a great time to be a pilot as far as opportunities out there. |

The most difficult part of this job is realizing we are just like a taxi driver. If the customer does not want to ride don't go. I understand wanting to get the job (mission) done but times are changing. The best thing you can do is to create a flight debriefing form. It will be a pain in the ass, but it needs to be filled out after every flight, wx abort or flight decline. Each crewmember initials the form after you complete your notes and they can add to it if necessary. That way you cover your back and have a record for down the road if the base is under pressure with low flight volume.
Remember we get paid the same either way. Good Luck. |

Good luck getting a crew to initial a form you created on your own without any prior authorization from the hospital or your company. You will be shown the door very quickly. |

Ummm.... the debrief form he's talking about is an official company form that most companies want to be filled out and signed by all crewmembers after every flight or declination of a flight.
It may or may not help you if you ever have to defend yourself. But it sure as heck can't hurt. |

I didn't think so. Does discussing and filling out the company debrief form, printing it, then passing it around for everyone's signature not constitute creating a debrief form?

I don't know about things now, I haven't flown HEMS/HAA for well over 10 years. Back then though, all radio traffic and phone calls with the comm center were recorded. If I thought the WX was safe to fly but the med crew, or one of the med crew, wanted to turn down the flight, I'd simply say to the comm center we were turning the flight down because the med crew/RN/Medic "declined for WX." If it was a a unanimous decision I'd say "we." Boy didn't that cause a stink! When they complained I'd ask if what I'd said wasn't true and accurate? You'd be surprised how fast folks started taking safe flights!
Oh, the trouble makers and pot stirrers sure complained and whined about me (behind my back, not to my face), but I didn't care then, or now! |

I'm guessing he or she is a newer HAA pilot who's having a hard time adjusting to the cruddy work ethic and toxic culture that many (not all) medical "crewmembers" bring to work. I used to let it get to me as well. Unfortunately, it took awhile for me to get it through my head that it wasn't me they had an issue with. It wasn't the weather or safety. It's simply laziness or lack of caring. To the OP... Don't let it get you all down or mess with your head or screw with your confidence. It's not about you. It's about going along to get along. You're not getting paid by the flight hour. Listen to your "crew"members... decline the flight... go back to sleep. DO remember to document EVERYTHING. |

Is it "comfort level" or work ethic? How about the medic I used to work with (and I use that term loosely!) who would bring an Xbox, games and a TV to work and set thim up in his room. He would get ticked off if we got a call and complain about having to do his job. He would say, "I didn't take this job to work!"

Yeah, that would suck. AMC doesn't question your weather turn-downs at all. They know the medcrew culture is the way it is.
I was at a base where medcrew minimums were 2000/3 day 2500/5 night. Never had management question our turndowns.
They didn't cry about the rain, but got REALLY nervous when vis dropped below 5 miles day or 10 miles night. Acting like a cat in room full of rocking chairs... started talking about places we could land (I'd offer if they wanted to, but said "no- only if it gets worse") |

Dude, it's not just the med crews!
I once had a pilot who tried to turn down a flight at the MORNING shift change because it was raining 60 miles from the receiving hospital. 60 miles away! BTW, it was light rain and the radar showed the showers slowly moving in the opposite direction from where he was going. I almost had to push him into the cockpit.....
I had another pilot who was doing a workover shift at our base who told me during the shift change brief that he had turned down a fight. When I asked him why, he said, "because it was raining at the receiving hospital when the call came in." It was a 90 minute flight to that hospital. When I asked him what the weather was supposed to be there when he would have been arriving he said, "he didn't know and didn't care because it was raining when the call came in and he didn't fly in the rain." He had blond highlights in his brown hair and the rest of us pilots in the program called him "Frosty the No Man!" |
