You'll never understand...it's not just 'most' qualified...the guy hiring has to want to work with you.

It's not the most qualified. It's the minimum qualified for minimum wage. Most qualified demands maximum pay. Cuts into the corporate profit and executive bonuses.

on what company ur talking about.  Solid corporate jobs are usually filled with good pilots who need good compensation in turn to provide the best the individual has both on and off the flight duty roster.

What is your definition of most qualified? Hours? I've seen plenty of 20 and 25,000 hour helicopter pilots kill themselves through poor decision making. I will always choose the most qualified pilot for the job. But the primary deciding factor is attitude. I reject more than half of the pilots a interview because of attitude. That percentage seems to grow larger with higher time pilots. Many have bad habits, And it's easier to start from a 5000 hour pilot who is still receptive than 20,000 our pilot with bad habits that is rigid. Furthermore, there is at least a prospect that they will work for you for five or 10 years And possibly become a critical part of the company's org structure. How much chance of that if you hire a pilot who is in his late 60s. Don't get me wrong I've hired plenty of guys that age. There's a time when I need their talent for a year or two but there's also a time when I'm looking towards the future of the company 5 to 10 years down the road.

25K hour helicopter pilots are few and far between, and you sure haven't encountered any.

Zed,

Seven of my best friends retired between 21k and 26k.

Two of them had accidents after 23k. One fatal.

I'm not saying they're more likely to have accidents. I'm just saying they're not immune.

Hard to imagine very many 25,000 hr helicopter pilots looking for work, most are retired by that time. Retired 4 years ago at age 70 with 28,000 hrs total, (25,000 hrs helicopter), mostly all heavy lift time and accident free ( except for a transmission failure in a Chinook in Vietnam) Have not been near a helicopter since, nor have any desire to. One of my coworkers retired at the same time with 31,000 Helicopter hours, also a Vietnam Veteran...RIP Vern.

use your definition.

the point is that you don't get to even consider that top 2/3 because they won't work for the compensation you offer. so you get to choose from the most qualified of what's left.

cheapest is best.

Want a government contract? You better have every ethnic group on hand and documented. Doesn't matter about qualifications.

We hired a guy in his sixties.  Took 3x the amount of time to teach a younger pilot how to use the GPS.  His first EMS mission, he decided not to use the GPS and flew in the wrong direction after dropping the crew off at the hospital and landed at a miltary base by mistake.  He was held at gunpoint and taken into custody until the next morning.  The crew had no idea where he was.  It was finally sorted out and he was gone a week later.  I am not saying all older pilots are tech challenged, but most are set in their ways and it if it is a choice and I was a pilot hiring manager, I would rather hire a lower maintenance person.

Land on any military field unannounced and see what happens. There will be guns and there will be arrests.
