A friend of mine works for a part91 operator flying type 1 firefighting helicopters. According to their manuals he is allowed to work 16h duty days. If he hits two 16h days in a row his third day is limited to 14h, afterwards he's back to 16h/day. How can that be legal? |

Yes that is legal. However unlikely. The forest service limits pilots to 8 hours in the seat. It is very common to to be on standby for 14 hours. As long as 8 hours flight time are not exceeded within that 14. Add another hour driving to and from the helicopter and 15-16 hour days are normal.
Now in other areas of part 91 there is no duty time limit. I have personally logged 15 hours in the seat doing power line work in one day. Often in the summer months 8 to 12 hours in the seat are common. |

careful to think about what can be ajudicated as 'careless and reckless'.
Don't think it can't happen. |

Long days at a small hourly rate is the key to real profitability. |

I once logged 12 hours in a helicopter in a single day... didn't realize it till after I ended up in the hotel and was logging my flight.
after each landing I would take a photo of the MFD that would keep track of flight time between landings. And cycles. I had to double check to confirm... but yup, 12 hours flight time. |
