can someone tell me about this position with AMC? How long does a "temporary" position last and when your gig is up does the company usually keep you on assuming you're a good worker? Thanks in advance.

The position is temporary, but the job is full-time permenant.   It means this position is protected for the pilot it belongs to, who may be away on a medical leave of absence, military leave of absence, etc.   They are coming back to it sometime in the future, maybe, and AMC is not allowed to give it away yet permenantly.

If you apply, you will work the position like it is a full-time position until the pilot returns.   If it's filling in for a medical leave of absence, that pilot has 12 months to return to it, and if he doesn't the position is first offered to the temporary pilot to keep as his own.   The pilot away will have to bid on some other open position in the company at that point.   Don't thinks this holds true for a military leave of absence.

If the pilot returns to the position, the temporary pilot then bids on any other open position IAW the bidding process in the CBA according to his seniority.

Find out why there is a temporary position open and you will have a better idea if taking the position will likely result in a permenant assignment or if it's truly temporary.

I was hired as a temporary pilot to cover a pilot that had a temporary medical issue ( heart). 4 months into that position the pilot with the medical issue was told by the FAA he wasn't getting his medical back. My position then became permanent.  It's a good way to get in the door as current employees usually don't bid those positions.

Thanks for the great info. I'm guessing they will train you in whatever airframe it's for? Such as an H135, 145, etc?

They will train you based on the needs of the company. However, you generally must meet the basic hiring requirements of a position. They "generally" will not put you in an IFR position if you don't meet the requirements for an IFR position. But, I've known pilots in the company that moved from VFR to IFR and didn't meet the IFR requirements. So, anything is possible. If you are external (not currently with AMC), take any position, get a seniority number, and build your seniority until you get the location/ airframe you want. I know a pilot who came from tours 5 years ago. Started in a vfr single engine base in the middle of nowhere. Transferred internally to multi engine vfr base that no one wanted. Then got a multi engine IFR base as a vfr only pilot. Now is west coast multi engine SPIFR pilot. Pay your dues and work hard.
