Looks like CalFire had an engine flameout on one of their new SUPER powerful Firehawks.  Despite being at sea level and 6000lbs below max gross... they couldn't hover (let alone fly away) and dropped the poor fella on the hoist.  Glad there were no serious injuries.

Really awesome that everyone thinks 2 engines is better than 1.  Did CalFire ever even have an engine failure on their Hueys?

Rotor inertia to set down from a hover, pick up back to a 3' hover, and set back down again softly. So, not straight down as you claim.

Huey would hover at flight idle. That accounts for the "pick back up after hovering auto".

I'm pretty confident I could have replicated that exact flight path in a Huey AEO.  Let the dope on the rope smack the ground, cut him loose as you come forward and into your auto flare.  Probably would have kept the RRPM higher than the Hawk did too.

The American people want to double their failure rate with twin-engine helicopters that need to hover, but can't if one engine fails. That's just commone sense.

I don't understand why all these states are buying firehawks.  A chinook will lift 4 times what they can and will fly single engine no problem.

#1 It looks like the pilot and flight crew did an awesome job.

#2 If that same engine out scenario happened in a huey in the middle of a hoist operation, a lot more people would have beeen going to the hospital.

#3 Yes they have had engine failures in the hueys.  Luckily their pilots are on top of things and have always Done a good job with bad situations like this.

#4 What is your problem? Are you just Ignorant, or do you have an issue with CalFire?

in what fantasy world would a Heuy have been a more safe aircraft in a engine failure during hoisting. Oh, yeah: he would have been able to fly away with better RPM in a Huey lol. the guy on the rope probably gets killed but oh well

No problem with CalFire, just like pointing out that two engines isn't the solution to all helicopter problems.  The dual engine crowd sure likes crapping on singles when one has an engine failure.

My wife says that I'm ignorant all the time, so that's probably a fact.  But I do have enough experience with hawks to have had a dual engine rollback while flying them.  So not too terribly ignorant to the topic at hand...

Brotard is a butthurt liberal. He gets upset when his political views get smacked down and ends up embarassing himself. He gets so mad that he'll come back with nothing but the juvenile snark he learns from late night tv shows and CNN. When he's really butthurt he bounces around to every thread to say, "you're stupid bro." It's as if he thinks sounding like a neanderthal is somehow a good look for him.

post, like many here n JH, but it serves as a point for discussion.  Single engine helicopter flame out with man on hoist leads to possible helicopter landing on hoistee.
