My boss says the piece of metal that caused a chip light was a piece of safety wire . I did not know that stainless steel was magnetic :)

Actually, Stainless Steel can be magnetic. It depends on the carbon compound.

It doesn't have to be magnetic IF it makes conductivity with the chip detector. Safety wire IS conductive. How the safety wire got to the chip plug would really be the question IF that's what made the chip det. light alluminate would be my question.

sent out for analys to see what it is. Easy to tell where it came from after figuring this out!

Still will cause a short on the chip detector if it creates a circuit across the teminal points.

Might do a study to see how safety wire got into the lube system.

Decades ago working as A&P on the Gulf Coast had a 212 with flickering transmission chip light. Never would stay on, just flicker with acft running. Inspected chip plug and found clean. Function check of circuit was good. Ran up acft and immediately had the flickering chip light. Pulled the transmission external filter and found canister approximately half full of brass!!! Magnetic no, but did complete the circuit with contaminated oil flowing across the chip detector. Replaced transmission, oil coolers and flushed all the lines. Never did hear back which bearing cage had failed inside the transmission.

It doesn't need to be ferrous to illuminate the light. It just has to be conductive. The Scary part is that you turn wrenches.
