The fact that utility work may take different skill sets, for example vertical reference, or simply rigging and hauling external loads, doesn't mean it is "better", or "harder".
The thing that makes EMS and normal utility work different is the fact that in utility work the pilot is required to problem solve, plan, and take independent action. EMS work requires skill, particularly SPIFR, and judgement. It has it's challenges.
My experience is that in true utility work you are left much more to your own planning and execution. I like this, every day is different aspect of utility work. If canned scenarios are your thing, EMS is probably a better fit. |

Personally, I like doing the least for the most. EMS has filled that bill and over 25 years, provided a good lifestyle, and filled my investments to over 2 mil. 7 on/off has been great. I could care less who thinks they have more skills. If that's what you gauge your worth on in life, you must be pretty pitiful. While it does take lots of eye rolling to get thru air medical for so many years, I'd do it all over again without hesitation. |

Aggressively invest in 401k. Last 10 years max out annual allowance; wife works with good income to allow high savings rate from EMS paycheck. |

Back in the day, if you couldn't handle long-line in seismic or moving drills, you transferred over to medical (EMS). Enough said. |

EMS sounds super boring, dealing with too many people and drama. Wow I get to be lazy and most hope they don't get a flight.. what is that. |

I don't wasnt to travel all the time. EMS works.
Med crews are everything you heard and worse. Utility better.
Schedule. EMS, no question.
Pay. Utility but you earn every penny. My EMS daily rate is pretty good.
Flight time. I don't care if I get one more hour. EMS works. IFR is fun. EMS is better for me.
EMS is easier on your body.
Maintenance. From what I've experienced, EMS and always being 135 is far superior.
All in all, EMS is a better career in the long run.

relevant.....
40 hours a week X 52 weeks = 2080 hrs per year
7 X 12 hours, 7 on / 7 off = 2184 hrs per year
If you want to work just 180 days a year, fly fires. You can work 180 days in 7 months, take the next 5
months off. |

Sleep at work, then go home and spend the day with family?
A massive win for everyone who LIKES their family.
Having your kids always asking 'how long will you be home' isn't as good as 'see you in the morning!' |

I worked HAA down south and never landed on a building more than 5 stories tall out in the middle of nowhere.
Ask some of the guys working Philly where most of the LZ's are on the 12th floor with mechanical turbulance on all sides.
Apples and pears. |

Sorry, I didn't think the question was that vague. Just wondering what a well paid ems guy can make in a year without working overtime. Roughly 180 days whether you consider it "real work" or not. Trying to compare apples to apples with my utility job. Thanks |

Starting pay in EMS goes from $65K to $85K base depending on your negotiating skills. Some companies pay more for hard to fill or high cost of living areas. Add 10% for OT accrued for late flights, and training you will have to do on one of your weeks off. Some adds a stipend for housing while on duty if you don't live local. |

Company A). 80k base, as much overtime as I wanted if desired. Company B) 85k base, 90k if don't use the insurance
Higher if you live somewhere that would come with geographic modifiers.
After my paid time off and the overtime to cover others for theirs, figure about 100k.
If you've never done it, then probably start a little less. If you have more experience than I have, then you maybe negotiate a bit higher. |
