Msg ID: 2696694 Poll: What kind of flying do you do and do you Like your job? +2/-2

What kind of flying do you do and do more times than not enjoy your job and don't really consider it "work"?

I flew EMS for close to a decade and can say I rarely didn't want to go to work. I enjoyed the company I flew for, the crews, and the client. I left to continue to go a different direction, but am curious, given the type of flying you do, do you enjoy what you do and would you do anything different?

I think this could help up and coming pilots to see a perspective of people who have been in the industry for quite some time.

THanks for you time if you choose to respond.

I fly utility. Lots of fire work during the summer mixed in with resource contracts with oil companies and the government. Winters are primarily charter work for a wide range of customers and my trainig responsibilitiesas a company flight instructor and checkairman.

I flew EMS for a year, but I just couldn't really get into that scene.

Military SAR--dug the missions but was not the kind who liked the waiting around, the rah-rah bull s h   i t, and doing what I was told...so when I could split, I did.
General charter was OK. But business was always slack, so no security.
Did offshore specialty work--lightering tankers--but the operator was marginal, so moved on.

That brought me to HAA. Worked up from unaided VFR single to IFR/NVG twin and laugh pay to OK pay. Enjoy about one day out of seven, the rest are either like watching paint dry or boring milk runs. Stand alone is the way to go, I wouldn't last at a hospital, too many politics and you have to, like, talk to people.
Would like to keep flying but no way out of HAA at this point. When I quit this job age discrimination will make it my last. Trying to find something to do to have a reason to get out of bed when it's over. Maybe I will.

I'm my problem, why don't you make you your problem instead of looking around for problems? I'm sure you would keep you busy.

Location is perfect, crews are good (For now, always some coming and going) and for now the company is treating me alright. Helps to have multiple close workover opportunities to line my paycheck when I want a boost.

Some days are better than others, but it beats the hell out of a real job, for me anyway.

Back>Front

Military> OH13/23, CH34, UH-1's (Primarily C/M). Great Training and Comradery.

Seismic> Peru Mountains and Jungle. Iran Mountains. Living in Tents/Camp. Just you and your Mechanic. Lots of flight time. Lots of decision making. Lots of External Loads. No good for Married life. +-2o days on/ 10-off.

Off-shore> 5ys in Persian/Arabian Gulf. Iran/Abu Dhabi/Dubai. Lots of boring flying. Good Salary. Hot w/ no AC. Lot of Twin Time

Factory Demo/Instructor Pilot. Good Training. LOTS of Travel. Great Experience. Meet lots of people. Many different A/C.

Semi-Retired Contract Pilot> Training and Ferry Flights. Work when and where I wish. My 2nd Hobby.

Never flew HAA. I will leave this to others.

My opinion> If you have a good Marriage and Family, pick what is good for your Family. Speaking from experience. Make the best of it.

PS>> For the Reader who does not like my "User Name"  just think of me as Charles Wentworth III.

HAA and love my current location. I get to fly in some of the highest elevations in the US which makes it fun and challenging. Plus our scene calls can be anything from landing in a parking lot to landing in the backcountry, first on scene at 13,500 ft. The trick is to find something that challenges you without being unsafe

Well said. We all go through challenges. I always felt the importance of knowing your limitation. I found the Mountain Flying was a challenge. In a 206A at 7K and 40C was something challenging for me. I scared myself many times. Thankful for the good Training we received. Never had an Engine Failure until I got into Twins. Then I had 3. Got me home safe. I never flew HAA. and not a lot of night until I flew Twins. I never thought I would feel real comfortable being woken up at 2AM, marginal weather, over mountains in West Virgina, no NVG's, in a Single, no Autopilot. The old C20's and LTS101's did have their issues?????
