In an effort to curtail any bad rumors (Yeah, good luck I know...) I don't think it's a management problem. A couple new bases have opened and there is a lot of shifting around currently. I know we lost 3 guys at our program to new base openings and then we gained one guy from another program which left an opening at his old base, and we have one guy leaving aviation all together to help his aging family out back on their farm. So, long story short, just normal shifting around. Nothing to see here. |

With a 30° bank restriction knowing if you exceed it you will get a letter in your file and or up to termination. There will be a time that a pilot needs to avoid some birds and he's going to be more concerned about exceeding his bank angle than he is the actual avoidance and it will cause an accident and kill somebody due to micromanagement from metro. It will be a situation where the pilot thinks that 30° bank angle that has been drilled into his head will be sufficient to avoid the mishap and BAM he hits the birds.. it will happen. We've all seen this kind of thing happened many many many times in the past due to micromanagement imposing pressures. |

2500 hrs here. In that short time I have really laid the smackdown on some birds. Two eagles, one seagul, and a whole bunch of field birds. Birds are no joke, and sprayin aint easy breezy |

I never hit any birds when I'm above a few thousand feet. Of course, actual helicopter pilots tend to spend a fair amount of time below that |

No? Not one birdstrike in 7,000 hours? What did they tell you was the reason for those feathers, and the blood, and the holes in your windscreen? Or did they just figure there was no point in trying to tell you anything? |

There is no pilot shortage. Just a culture of poor pay, military think and medical dominance that drive the medical pilot jobs.
Duh.... why would any pilot put up with some fat nurse deciding what’s safe? when with long line skills you could be flying alone dropping supply’s or water or power line stuff? Twice the pay and half the BS literally exactly the same time away from home as figured out per month |

the ems pilots I know are home every day. I know zero utility pilots that go home every day. Most of us that are IFR are making an easy six figures. Find a good ems base and utility looks like a very bad deal. |

Submitted a resume last spring. I have a fair amount of EC135 time and some IFR experience. I get a call from some area manager that says the dates on my resume are wrong and I need to fix it and resubmit. I didn't have my resume in front of me so I said "yes sir, I'll get right on that, sir...". Click. End of conversation. Then get a couple "we filled the position" emails. So for some reason I'm thinking I'll fix my resume and get a call back at some point. Well, I looked at my resume and all the dates were correct with no gaps, etc. I never got a call back but six months later I get a call from somebody else asking me if I was interested in a position? No, not really.
Before taking a position at Metro, watch some of the videos on their youtube channel.

Position that allowed me to live where I want and offered as much home time, I would consider it
None of the guys I know have ever had a schedule anywhere as good as HEMS. The idea that such positions exist is probably pure fantasy. |

I work a 12/12 just for the fire season 6-7 months depending and make what I did for an entire year in EMS.
per diem, paid travel to and from, and only have to get myself to an airport that has scheduled flights.
that being said, I did the EMS thing, wasn't for me. But I could see how some would enjoy it. My skills dulled real quick and complacency seemed like it could creep up easier than it would in previous jobs.
am I home every night? nope. Hotels for me. but I wouldn't move and buy a house for a EMS job anymore anyways. Too many friends moved accross the country only to have their bases closed shortly after.
if you have some longline time it's worth trying out the utility side In my opinion. Definitely fun flying that keeps you on your toes.
just a random guys opinion!
fly safe |

Apparently not everyone does according to a few posts up regarding jobs that allow you to live anywhere that pay well with time off.
glad you're willing, doesn't make my statement any less true. Fork over that pretend money please.
granted most of my friends that have struck that bad luck were either AMC pilots or flying for small companies.
you can turn it toxic like all JH posts or just realize I'm a pilot with a different story than some, offering insight into a part of the industry that others may be interested in considering schedules and pay.
god forbid pilots helping eachother out. That would be so lame |

Airlines or freight cargo. Everything else sucks hind tit. Helo industry as a whole is low pay. HEMS and GOM is only an illusion of anything worth a crapp and leads to alcoholism while you try to convince yourselves otherwise. You know it's true. Drink up. |

If I had my fixed wing stuff I'd totally give airlines a shot. autopilot and drinking coffee sound nice sometimes. also no need to convince me or anyone else since I'm pretty sure we're all alcoholics regardless of where or what we fly.
maybe those cargo guys get the top shelf liquor tho? |

Yes, the fire guy is exactly right. Many have relocated only to have a base closed. I know of two within the last three years. Moving your family may not be fiscally smart, but it does help to keep some happier than the whole commute and be gone for a week (or two) thing. In that case, it's just a cost of doing the job and keeping the family together.
As for me, I subscribe to the "Absence makes the heart grow fonder" theory, which is not neccesarily how it works. More like "get outta my face and I can tolerate you easier"... |

Could be most experienced pilots think their mandatory "stabilized approach" is stupid and keeps them in the dead man's curve much longer then needed. Or don't want to get fired on your first small muff up. |

Metro's not competitive anymore with pay, they need to catch up (or lead... imagine that!) Retirement collecting ex military pilots willing to take lower salarys (all surplus) is definitely not helping pilots in the industry either, orr HAA anyway |
