Our industry is brimming with professionals. I guess mechanics are just like pilots and never have forgetful moments. Wrenches never get left on decks, cowlings never have are left unlatched, gas caps never get left off etc. Keep doing what your doing it's your life. |

I have watched a few airline pilots do their preflight at major airports and pretty much all they do is a walk around. They don’t open engine cowlings, doors,or anything else.Think about that next time you get on an airliner. |

specified torque isn't about "tight", it's about "clamp' (think bolt stretch).
You guys kill me. |

The point he was making, is that a tightened cross threaded nut, or other hardware is all you need if you are not going to apply the proper torque to properly threaded hardware. Not torqued=bad, just like cross threaded but tightened=bad. Both bad. |

"Think about bolt stretch"
There is no bolt stretch when torqued under 200 in lbs on aviation hardware. |

I worked with a pilot back in the 80's that never did a preflight, just jumped in started up and was gone. One Saturday morning I walked down to the helipad and as I walked by the aircraft I turned the tail rotor. The whole T/R gearbox moved, one of the gearbox mount bolts had sheared, so I removed what was left of the bolt and called the pilot to come down to show him something. As he walked up to me, I handed him what was left of the bolt and told him this is why we do preflights. |
