Was working hands on with others who had all the experience you could ask for. Graduated from Spartan School of Aeronautics in 84. They had just acquired a Schwitzer for a monthly course for helicopters. I was like "I'm never going to work on them" So I did not stay another month. 35 yrs later ive been working on them with PHI and with some of the best mechanics you could work with and learn from.

has an A&P program.  They are not very serious about helicopter training though.  They used to have a couple of ex Army Huey helicopters, but sold them.  I think they have a Schweizer sitting in the hangar now that they can point at and teach the students "that there thing, that's a heeli-o-choppa".

All other training is done on old Cessnas and a couple of King Airs.

Point is, there is a program.  And it's not a bad program....  just very basic, which is all the FAA requires.

the private AP schools went out of business when public CCs and technical schools offered same program at cheaper price. Plenty of options in most states. Problem is nobody wants an outdoor job. Same for the construction trades. No takers.

Sowela in LCH has been training mechanics for decades and a whole lot cheaper than private schools. Companies don't care where you got your ticket, they start you with no experience at the same entry level.

The advertisement for a helicopter mechanic career was the biggest bait and switch I was ever witness to. Pay is a joke and so is usually the company / job.

I can't disagree with the pay aspect. The company side depends on which one you choose. There are still some much better than the bottom feeders. Choose carefully! On the plus side, 7x7 and 14x14 schedule is hard to beat if you AND your family can adapt to it.
