Interested in what the payscales are like for IFR programs at different operators. REACH in particular as well, if anyone has info. |

I wouldn't wast my time on a IFR base. Better to be VFR and do a few days of workover. Just my 2 cents |

IFR is the way to go. Makes the job much easier, safer and less stressful. |

HAA pay in any aircraft at any company is too low in my opinion. |

I see your point but for me it’s not worth it. My company only pays an extra $5k a year which is less than $28 a shift for 180 days before taxes. A lot of the helos are old T1 135’s and not worth the pressure or risk with a heavy medcrew and the average 300lb patient. I can make up that pay difference in less than 6 days of workover. I would rather fly VFR with 1 checkride a year and not have to know twice as much knowledge, more training mins and twice as many check rides. I enjoy my 1000’ and 3 miles via mins which in reality we use 1500’ and 4 miles. I have done IFR and enjoyed it with a copilot and a much newer more powerful aircraft. To each his own and you have to decided what’s best for you. Obviously IFR is your preference and that’s cool. I prefer VFR.
Cheers |

No, not scared just not stupid to take off with 70 gal on average to go IFR. IFR flying is way easier because someone else is managing the entire flight for you. All you do is file a 60 sec flight plan on ForeFlight and go. The anutopilot claims out, levels off, flies the flight plan and approach flies you right on down to mins. Way easier if you ask me because your going airport to airport unless you are lucky to have a hospital approach. VFR you actually have to pay attention to the weather, hazards like towers, airspace and other aircraft. I enjoy my 407 where I can top off and throw a 400lb patient in there with my 2 medcrew and anytime of the year. I could never do that in a 135. I would never get off the ground.
If I wanted to fly IFR everywhere I go. I would go to the airlines. No fun in flying in the clouds all the time. |

Yes, I have flow EMS IFR and the only thing we really used IFR for was to go from VFR to IFR to recover at our airport or depart IFR to VFR. Never IFR both ways because of the fuel requirements would drastically reduce our payload. Most of the time the customer would say never mind.
If you have ever flown a EC-135T1. You would know what I’m talking about. |

that's just it. I don't know what you're talking about. Lots of us out here flying capable aircraft IFR. Don't discourage somebody from having a better job just because of your one bad experience.
"My company doesn't pay much for IFR and the aircraft are old junk so that means, of course, that's the way helicopter IFR works." |
