Does anyone actually sump the fuel in this day and age? I have been sumping fuel from my helicopter for 15 years and never found a problem. Sure it's critical in piston engines, but jet engines suck up all kinds of stuff and keep on trucking. What a waste of time it is to go collecting fuel from under helicopters when you can be hitting that second cup of coffee to make sure you can 'see and avoid' while you are on your mission! |

I sumped a brand new a/c and the fuel came out pink, discovered the proseal that was suppose to be fuel resitant and seal the tank was mixed wrong, fuel bladder was coming apart, entire tank needed to be replaced. sumping another a/c, a fair amount of water was discovered, also found out the anti-water warning system on our fuel truck failed and took out the trucks filter because the hatch on top was not sealed properly and it had been raining during the week, needed to have the truck vendor come out and repair fuel truck due to all the water. guess what we found in the other helo's we operated, oooppsssss... all the above a/c burned jet-a, by the way I sump my a/c per RFM... |

Not like its costing you anything. Its peace of mind knowing that that is one thing that's 99.9% sure not going to cause me any problems today. I think it's worth 5 mins out of my day. And I have found biomass in fuel before. Stay safe always. |

There is a good reason for sumping fuel -- its a great practice to make sure your fuel isnt cantimated. Seen a few times over the years!

I will also ask that an unfamiliar source sump before I accept fuel. Yeah, I've only had a couple bad fuel samples from them over my 5 decade acreer, but one contaminated refueling might be enough to: A, put me in the dirt; and B, muck up fuel metering system. I don't need maintenance to remind how stupid lazy it is not even make the minimal effort.... |
