For all you fellow mountain pilots, what are your personal limitations for flight acceptance in high winds? Just curious how others look at windy days. I fly in the Rockies and personally I'm comfortable with most flights in the gusting to 50-60 range. Of course that changes for more difficult backcountry LZs.

depends on some specific things such as:

-topography i need to fly over to get to the destination.

-location of LZ (Lee vs Windward)

-gust spread

-who I am flying (frequent fliers or head shed)

-what airframe i'm in

-how balsy i'm feeling

40-50 kts is my general purpose comfort zone. If it is higher it better be for a good reason. And yes, I think subjectively when making flight decisions. It is never black and white, no matter how much we, as an industry, push for it to be.

I fly in any wind. If it is 50-60 kts it may as well be 70-80kts.

We will figure it out when we get there.

Smigel,

Most places, the company or governing body wind limits are less than personal wind limits. Wouldn't you say?

WT.F does groundspeed have to do with VNE?

What are you flying?  I call it a day, with my 206b, when the wind hits 50 kts.
