Hey, for anyone who knows about the US Forest Service Helicopter Inspector Pilot position (open continuous announcement in multiple locations), would you say it’s a good job? Would you recommend it to a friend?

For the right person it's a great job.  You spend a lot of time on the road but set your own schedule.  There won't be a lot of flight time for you.  Gov pension and benefits, job security.

Have you done any fire work? Just call and talk to one of the hips and they can give you the low down.

And  long line experience, plus now knowlege at least of 133 HEC (If you don't know what that is, you don't pass) not to mention Mountain time.  You need to know about animal capture and other BLM needs too as USFS certifies for BLM

You never get enough currency flying from the government.  Government retirement is not what it was fifty years ago in spite of the myths.  At least they got one and their version of 401K can be customized and is good. Lots of exacting, mind numbing paperwork.  Time off and Sick leave are pretty fair.  Lots of medical choices, some okay, none great. Away from home a lot.  They like dual rated best they sometimes take a 182 or similar to do a pop-up inspection, then return.

like any career , it is what you make of it. Sure you are not flying as much, however the influence, experience, and guidance you provide is very appreciated. For those that complain about the fire and aviation contracts, rules, programs etc its a chance to be a part of steering the boat in the correct direction.... you know helping to enact change instead of just complaining.

Could be a good gig for someone who is ready to get into admin. The best ones are the ones who make it a calling to impart thier vast amounts of tribal knowledge to the up and comers. Unfortunately fire experience trakes a back seat to veterans points. More than one highly qualifed pilot was left behind in favor of a Vet with zero fire experience. Don't get me wrong veterans deserve all the mileage the points will get them provided they have the experience. I actually had a HIP tell me one time that he had zero long line experience while he was evaluating my long line demo. There was a time when a lot of the HIPS did not meet the basic hiring requirements for carding. I think the pendulum has swung the other way now.
