A small aircraft, believed to be a helicopter, has crashed on the roof of a high-rise building in New York City, local officials say. Only few details were immediately available.

The accident happened just before 2 p.m. on Monday when the aircraft crashed or crash-landed on the top of 787 7th Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. It happened at a 54-story office building.

The New York Fire Department confirmed the crash and declared a 2-alarm, but details about injuries were not immediately known. It’s unclear what type of aircraft is involved and how many were on board.

This is a breaking news alert.

From the looks of that twitter video, it appeares he lost control in IMC, creating the steep dive, he then regained control but when back up in to the clouds rather than staying low where he could see.

RIP - Hard way to learn a hard lesson.

Went into clouds 3 times.  Cloud bases were high enough that even though inverted, he righted the A/C and flew level for a minute ------ and then went back into clouds.

Twice.

3rd time, rotor RPM was too low to control A/C.  He had pulled collective to the up-stop in a panic.

Lots of witnesses and there was a (bone-chilling) tower tape from ATC.

My Army unit heard the tape as part of a safety class given by D.A. Civilians.  The class consisted of an in-depth analysis of the accident.  I don't know if it was ever released to the public.

My recollection is over 20 years old, but it was hard to forget.  The pilot's tone and tenor was disturbing.  He was an individual in a complete, total panic.  His words were plaintive screams.  ATC would offer assistance ("What do you need?"  "You are clear to procede however you like.")  I'm not sure the pilot made more than one or two coherent reponses.  Usually silence, punctuated by occasional screams "Emergency! Emergency!"

One of the barriers to releasing the entire class to the public was the fact that they dug up the LT's training records and showed him barely passing any phase of the training.  His biggest problems came during instrument training.

I've never been in a helicopter with as much nose down as the start of the Twitter clip.

He left 34th st. but was flying for 11 minutes before impact? You could make Morristown in that amount of time.
