If you go below minimums, they will still call you with a flight request. You also have to notify them by phone when you turn red for whatever and update it every two hours. Might as well stay yellow and go to bed. They will call either way so what‘s the point?

Not going red doesn't do justice to the patient. Remember this is why we do this.  If red, dispatch immediately tells the caller we are not coming, other arrangements can be made and most importantly time is saved which is what the reason for calling us is anyway!  It's not about convenience to pilots, crew, or anyone else but the patient! WISE UP!

it means we’re still getting the call and either turning down or accepting.  The patient doesn’t know or care whether the little box on the screen is yellow or red when I get called and turn down the flight

The only ones that know what color the little square is is you and your dispatch. The hospital or FD are calling no matter what color it is. They don't stop calling when it's red because they don't know what the hell color it is. Get it?

the only people who know it is red are people for whom ‘red’ doesn’t change anything.  Dispatch still calls.  Pilot still answers

2. If I'm red dispatch doesn't tell the hospital I'm not coming, they call me and ask if I can go.

We don’t have weather color codes anymore. Don’t get offended if they call with a flight. Just be the pilot you are trained to be and asses each flight as they come to determine if it can be safely done. It’s really no big deal. I don’t care if I’m the 4th aircraft to have been requested either. This helicopter shopping thing is silly. If you can’t do it then say so. Of course factor the fact you are number 4 into the decision making. 

We are lucky to have VFR and IFR assists cover each other. Thus when a VFR base declines it goes to the IFR base. It won’t go to another VFR base in that case.

Back when we had the weather codes, a base would go red, go to bed only to wake up 10hrs later and find the weather changed and was clear! So updating every few hours is acceptable in my opinion if you still use weather codes.

I agree with the whole "helicopter shopping" thing. The folks needing smelling salts and clutching their pearls when a hospital continues to call after a turn down is a joke: do the flight if you can, don't do it if you can't. We all know how many bases turn down many perfectly doable flights due to "weather". Same with the SF sheet saying they have lower minimums. Yawn. Take. The. Flight. If. You. Can. Pretty simple. Who gives a crap what they tell the hospital or FD. 

I agree about the red thing, too. But if they're going to call regardless, may as well stay yellow until it's green. They could get rid of red altogether and it wouldn't matter one bit. I did work somewhere where there was an unwritten rule that you never went red as they then would not call with a request and then the situation that you describe would happen. In the end, it's all the same. I'll stay yellow in bad or questionable weather until somebody tells me otherwise.

I had asked one of our dispatchers the same question: If you know the Wx is crappy and below minimums why do you have to call in the middle of the night? His answer was: "Since we cannot accept a flight on your behalf, we cannot turn one down on your behalf either." Sounded OK to me....
