This turd has fed my family, afforded me a great life style, put a million bucks in my 401k, and allowed me to fly the latest technology put in the air. If that's considered the turd of the industry, then smear it all over me.

why does 1 mil in 401k astound you? It’s pretty easy if you start young.  Spend less time trolling and more time doing maffs.

On the top as one of the Worst accident Records according to the FAA and almost unregulated like tour idiots.  look it up. try flying at night at 2am-3am to a area where you have no idea what the LZ is like and try landing there to pick up your kid,Wife, husband who just had a stroke or serious car wreck And has to be flown. Your opinion will change then.

And why they require so few hours to fly utility.  I did it.  Was fun but got old fast.  Been flying HEMS for 8 years and I still enjoy it.  HEMS is what you make of it.  I try to be professional and have my stuff ready to go. When the call comes in at 2am I can safely wake up and check weather and get my risk assessment approved and Depart base enroute to a scene I’ve never been to in under ten minutes.  I do it quickly yet safely through experience and drive.

On the other hand you have the people Who do anything they can to turn a flight down and take forever to get the most basic of tasks completed (in the name of being safe of course) helping to give HEMS a bad rep.  I have none of these at my base, thankfully.

Indeed we are mostly gypsys. Most of us prefer the travel and new places. In my EMS days I rarely had to fly to a dark LZ to pull off a hero landing in pitch black. Make that NEVER! and neither have you. There are always at least a half dozen patrol cars and fire vehicles there first otherwise you’d never get called unless ‘on scene‘ people asked for you. We usually flew some nothing flight from hospital to hospital in very nicely equipped machines.

In my EMS time I might fly 20 hours a month I now often fly 50 hours a week doing far more precision work than any EMS flight ever.

Power line pilots fly more hours, yet hour for hour are LESS prone to crashes. Look that up.

I’m sure wherever YOU happen to have worked is how it is in the rest of the country.  Narrow minded.  None of us pull off ”hero landings” as you put it. It’s just a skilled professional landing in an unknown LZ at night based on your own recon essentially.  Anyone who trusts the “on scene commander” is a fool.   my base does 60/40 hospital to scene.

Im not putting utility pilots down in any way.  It’s a good job for starting and for people who are nomads.  Other than that there is better stuff out there IMO

You think utility is A good job for starting? I think you have a misinformed view of the helicopter Industry. Utility is the cream of the crop pilots doing hairy and hazardous flying. You call landing in an lz challenging you make me laugh. You have absolutely no idea what pline pilots are out there doing. You should educate yourself so you don’t look ignorant .

someones a bit defensive of their power line work.  You might want to look into that hazardous attitude thing before you cream in your crop.

I’m not defensive it’s a kick in the nuts for a guy like you to tell a guy like me that utility work is for new guys. You don’t know what you’re talking about and I’m almost sure youll be doing 3am hero landings for the rest of your career. Stay away from utility no one wants to deal with your bull. a qualified utility pilot  can make up to 3 times what you make. Why would you ever consider this a new person job? I consider ems a new person job.
