At a place I worked, there were 2 differrent private HAA companies in the county. The county EMS department mandated that the fire department dispatched for the private HAA companies. We each had a tone, just like every fire station had a tone. Each tone was unique to each station. We were just another station in the CAD. In this particular CAD system, if a unit was placed on an assignment in the CAD, the CAD would set off the tones. There was no way to avoid it. In the winter months we could be on standby for 10 different wrecks at the same time. Each time another wreck got dispatched, our tones went off. If we were returning to base from a completed flight and a call came in, the dispatcher would ask if we were available. If we said yes, they would assign us to the call in the CAD, the CAD would set off the tones, and the dispatcher would give us the info.

My point was regarding the comment above about why dispatch would set off tones when the helicopter is already flying. The dispatcher might not have a choice if that's the way the computer is set up. Rather than complaining about it online, they could just call the dispatcher and ask the question "why do the tones go off if we are already flying?" There is probably a simple and logical explanation.
