Ok. Unions exist to keep the pilots in line as a collective bargaining group To help the company. It's far easier to schmooze the negotiations team then hundreds of individua pilots.

The team puts on the act of negotiating hard and eventually convince the pilots to settle for 3% ove two years and a few BS things like 2 cents more a mile for driving your own car.
