you did the right thing but remember an AME is really none other than a POI when it comes to interpreting legal requirements as only FAA Legal in DC are allowed that.  


Doctors tend to think they can do anything they want without reference to Part 67, say time required to be grounded after successful high blood pressure resolution or after one is considered to be healed from a hip replacement.  


AMEs can NOT change those requirements, so, they can NOT clear a pilot to return to work until the wait periods are over.  They must reference those requirements.  Do yourself a favor and look up whatever is required per FAA before you have to deal with an AMEs schrew up.  In any case if one is released too soon just call the FAA Aeromedical Branch to make sure all is well.  


Seen both the above messed up with a nasty response from Oak City though in both cases the pilots were not negatively impacted, not sure what FAA said to the doctors.


AOPA is a great resource in such cases though helicopter pilots tend not to think that organization has much to do with our helicopter crowd, which is totally incorrect.  Gotta be a member, but very much worth it.
