Unironically, we thought we were living in the lap of luxury when PHI started transitioning to single-man rooms in their onshore living quarters in the late 1980's.  Trouble was, they were still just really cheap trailers with walls so thin that you could clearly hear the pilot in the next bedroom snoring and farting in his sleep.  The Ritz-Carlton, it was not.  (The other side of that coin was that the other pilot could hear *you* doing that stuff too.)

For the majority of my time with PHI, I worked/lived offshore, and never got my own room. Most of the time I shared a room with my mechanic.  But I did workover on jobs where the pilot was in a 6-man bunkroom with the five other beds occupied every night.  Not fun - don't know how the regular pilots put up with that.

Working in the GOM is not for everyone.  If you put a high value on things like creature comforts and privacy, you probably won't be reall happy down there.
