The OP asked are the certificates worth it? That depends on the person, what their plans may be, and just plain fate. I have a B.S. degree but have never earned income from it, but I got a lot out of the academics required, and am very glad I did it. It also looked good on my resume. After my tour as an Army pilot I got both a flight instructor certificate, and an A&P certificate. As fate would have it, my plan to be a (low time) pilot/ (inexperienced) mechanic was negated by a glut of better qualified Vietnam Vets. Building experience as a pilot/mechanic can be hard to find, and as has been mentioned, tough after a long day of flying. I eventually ended up wrenching full time, and have never regretted any of the training and experience I sought and got in the aviation biz, whether it earned income or not.
