I've been asked by a couple of ( non-aviation ) employers to do mechanic work when they learned I was an

A&P. It never works unless you are hired as a mechanic. Period.
If you are a pilot or hired for any other work, stick to that. It doesn't have to be dramatic, just politely decline or renegotiate your employment.
