Don't want to turn a wrench,...? Don't tell them you're a mechanic!

True, I could leave that off of my CV, but any employer who actually checks the FAA database will see every certificate that I hold. Maybe they don't say anything. Maybe they ask why I withheld that information.

And as another commenter stated, having the certificate can help open a door that otherwise would be closed to a 1300 hour pilot.

Sure If you want to use it. Sounds like this guy doesn't.

I don't mind using it. I don't mind "helping" the regular staff mechanics. But I also don't want the be lied to by the company so that they can get me in the door as the company's only full time mechanic.

You should just be a mechanic.

Maybe. As a mechanic with seniority in the company, I was making a little more money than this company was paying me to fly.  Not much, but a little.  And I lived in an area with a lower cost of living.

As a mechanic, I don't have to worry about keeping my medical as I age.
