Try to travel and work light. Less overhead. Sometimes you do need a kneeboard for something to write on, fill out forms, etc. Get one of the basic models from Sporty's or wherever that is just a slab of aluminum, a strap and a clip at the top. Carry a few rubber bands to slip around the approach plate book and keep the pages from flapping in the cockpit breezes. If you want to go even lighter for holding enroute charts, fold it like you want and clip the chart to your trouser leg with a medium size alligator clip. Some people make a deal about clipping the iPad, if you use one, to your leg. It's easier and just as quick to use if you just sit it on the console and look at it as needed during the approach. Anyway less is more and lighter is better and also cheaper and easier to keep up with. You see a guy walking to the aircraft with a big bag o' gear, gadgets & gizmos...he prob'ly ain't been in the game too long. The old pros usually walk out with a Timex watch, a pencil and a flashlight and have to borrow batteries...but they fly around the world and get the job done.
