Sorry but I think this deserves its own thread and havent seen it discussed anywhere yet and who knows how many years are going to pass before we get a complete picture.
If in fact he was using FOREFLIGHT (as the news article alludes) for weather/metars, navigation, traffic, obstacle/terrain avoidance, etc etc etc..... did it set him up for failure?  Did it give him too much confidence?  Like wearing NVG's in weather do these apps allow us to push vfr further than we should?  Anyone have a story of their own while using?
I had a manager confronted with why the company decided to take out all XM Weather capabilities in all our helicopters.  Other than the obvious saving subscription costs he simply said the company doesnt want anyone pushing weather with it.  Seemed like a dumb answer to me at the time but if in fact the pilot in question had no FOREFLIGHT would he have gone?  
(I realize its speculation that he even had it on)
