the term all the time and rather like the image it conjurs. If I ever meet you I will use the term excessively in the hopes that it will make you foam at the mouth. What do you propose they call helicopter gunships? Gee, how about helicopters with guns on them? Nah, too many words. During WW I and II airplanes were often referred to as kites. I like that too. You can probably say thank you Sir to the Navy for their early association with helicopters. On the other hand I would not refer to the Brantly ( R22 perhaps?)you likley fly as a ship. More of a dinghy or a punt. Not that there is anything wrong with that.
