How do pilots police pilots?

I'm a old guy and other a very short time flying HAA, which nearly made my head explode, I've been flying utillity my wholel life.

Half or more of the flying I do is in conditions like, or worse, those on the day of this accident.  I've never hit or hurt anything or anyone.

I've been telling pilots for years, when the vis goes down, you slow down and go down.  You're in a helicopter, not an airplane.  You cam turn around, you can fly as slow as you want, you can hover and even land if you need too.

And half or more of those pilots think I'm crazy, that you should never slow down in low vis.  Hell, most of them fly just like this guy did, at cruise speed blasting through the bottom of the cloud layer when there's 1490 feet of clear sky below them.

I've even said it on here and I get the same response.  You guys could learn something by listenting to pilots who do this type of thing for a living.

If you work for a company that's going to fire you because you landed in poor vis, then you're working for the wrong company.  And bottom line, so what?  At least your alive.  There's plenty of heli jobs out there for competent qualified pilots.

Learn these rules and live by them.

1. NEVER lose sight of your ground reference.  If it's starting to fade, you better have another one or turn back towrds it.

2. When vis goes down, Slow down, and get down.  Do not fly along the bottom of the clouds.  If you're worried about wires or towers etc, then go slower, or land.  

3. IF you go IIMC, immediately commit to IFR.  Get on the instruments, use yoru scan that you're proficient in, climb towards known lower terrain, communicate with ATC.
