When I was new to flying in the GOM, I was taking a gang out to a platform and all the way there, they were talking about how there were two guys on the platform: a white guy and a black guy.  They kept saying how much the white guy hated the black guy, they used the N-word, how the white guy said the the black guy smelled bad, etc.  I expected to find the worst situation.  When I got there, the black guy had a cold and was sitting down in the kitchen.  He had a blanket hanging around his shoulders and the white guy was serving him some soup he had cooked and dotingly taking care of him.  It was like he was taking care of a family member.  The whole time I was there, they treated him completely normaly.  Only when they weren't around him, did they all act like they hated him to each other.

It reminded me of something someone said to me once about racism in the South vs. the North.  She said that in the South, people hate all black people but love the ones they know personally.  In the north, people love all black people but hate the ones they know personally.
