I fly SPIFR.  I'm not just a pilot at a program that advertises it, we actually do it when there isn't ice or thunderstorms. We have monthly training requirements if we don't do enough actual IFR and quarterly training requirements regardless of how much IFR we have flown. I do a lot of hand flying when weaher permits. I retired out of the military flying utility helicopters (including MEDEVAC assignments) where I was a Standardization Instructor Pilot and an Instrument Examiner.  I flew other civilian jobs before I took my first EMS job. I had no difficulty transitioning into SPIFR with my progression from 2 pilots IFR through single pilot VFR into SPIFR.  I don't think I'm special.  I had a good background to start with and did a seemingly logical progression in jobs. 


IMHO SPIFR is easier than flying 2 pilots, even if you have GREAT CRM and 2 competent pilots.  The AP does EXACTLY what I tell it to do every time, all I have to do it tell it correctly.  There is no discussion (beyond the 3 to go chat and maybe a call from my OCC), no opinions to share, no disagreements and no hurt feelings.  Those who have flown real 2 pilot crews where one of you was really in charge and the other guy wasn't, but kinda wanted to be, know what I'm talking about. There is no way anybody is going to pay for 2 highly qualified IFR pilots.  They'll pay for one and then hire an SIC who meets the requirements and then you'll effectively be training that pilot on every flight until they are squared away or they quit/get fired. Chances are with a second pilot you arent going to have an AP and you'll have to explain everything and watch like a hawk to make sure it happens that way.
