They have a hiring matrix that they'll plug your numbers into and decide what step they want to start you out at. If you've got time in the aircraft, mountain time if flying in a mountainous area, previous EMS experience, NVG time, etc... you've got a decent shot at not starting at the absolute bottom of the totem pole. You can try to argue for a higher step and they can either give it to you, or not. 


Bottom line if you pass the interview (Lordy, if you don't you really have some soul searching to do) you'll get an offer you can accept or not. That's that. The union takes at least 1%, no getting out of it.
