I went to a junior college and it cost far less than the other schools, the curriculum is dictated by the FAA. I guess it all depends on what you want and where you want to live. If money is a motivating factor, get in with a company that does corporate jet maintenance and work your way into a corporate gig.
As a helo mechanic, I doubt much money will come your way and with the current state of HAA, I really wonder if the helo industry will be downsizing at some point.
Having been maintenance in the military and civilian world as well as aircrew in the military, maintenance personnel in my experience are never treated as well as the pilots/aircrew. My .02
