The perception NYC pilots tend to push the idea they're the greatest because they have the fattest wallet (because they need it in that environment) does exist, and, there are a lot of nice people there as well.
If any particular operation allows what you suggest, which they do, the pilots need to fix it. Easy. Yes and no. Depends how you approach the subject. I had to do it three times in @25 year during my time operataing there, successful each time, and not small companies, at all.
When all is said and done pilots get paid to fly from A to B and back or perhaps C and D thrown in, and so forth. Do it the same way, all the time, to the same standards, all the time, irrespective of who the fad character is you have in the back, and you'll get to retirement with a nest egg, hopefully.
Get rapped up in the baloney and you'll wind up pushing the standards aside. Not a good thing.
