Sadly, there's an event every so often in NYC, but we never seem to get past the insults and character assassinations to the real underlying issue. There's a perception in the corridor, that it's the most difficult place to fly, only the very best get jobs there, and it's the Mecca of helicopter aviation. It's glaringly apparent to a transient pilot, that NYC isn't any of these, but don't tell a local that. They are too busy telling their friends what rich and famous people they fly, as though the thickness of the wallet in the back makes the air less dense. Sadly, because of money, NYC is a high risk environment for pilots. Yeah, it pays a little more than some jobs, has great equipment, but is it really that great of a place to live and work and raise a family? Yeah, nothing beats getting up at 3am, spending 2 hours in traffic, being told that day it's now an overnighter, first trip is to Boston and you are already late, you forgot your wetwipes for the dirty fbo toilets at JRA, today's copilot is her first day according to her Instagram account, your last trip isn't till 9pm, and you haven't seen any of your kids school functions in years. But what the heck, the money is good and the weather sucks, so let's not buck the way it's done in NYC. You might get a selfie with a person you don't really know.
